When was the last time you thought about your pillow? If your answer is "it's been a long time" or "not at all", you're not alone. Many patients I treat focus primarily on mattresses when considering sleep equipment. Mattresses get a lot of attention, and for good reason. Your mattress is the largest and most important financial investment you make while sleeping. But when it comes to sleep quality, pillows are almost as important as mattresses.

If you're sleeping on a worn-out pillow that you knead and fold for comfort every night, that's a red flag that it's time for an update. Even if your pillow isn't old and deflated, it may not be the best choice for your comfort and support.

Why your pillow matters

A good sleeping position is the key to a good night's sleep and no pain and stiffness when you wake up. Your pillow helps maintain a healthy sleeping position. What does this pose look like? Align the body from the knees and hips, through the spine to the chest and shoulders, head and neck.

If your neck and shoulders are not adequately supported, or are supported at an angle that causes twisting, lengthening, or curling, this can cause your spine and body to lose alignment, resulting in neck, shoulder and back strain and discomfort, as well as insomnia.

As with your mattress, comfort and support are important in choosing the right pillow. The best pillow for you is one that is comfortable for your head to rest on, supports your head, neck and shoulders, and matches your mattress.
